January 2019

I was breathing heavily and my palms were sweating. I moved my hands and feet up the rock the way the muscles in my body remembered to, and I didn’t dare look down. I told myself I had to make it… and when I finally made it to the top, a massive wave of relief washed over me… And that, my dear friends, was the story of how I climbed my first V0 highball.

There was no grace, there was no finesse, and I’m sure I could have climbed (what is considered the easiest bouldering grade in climbing) with a little more elegance, but Ms. Never-Doing-a-Highball finally did her first highball.

It was 4 months into our relationship when David and I went on our first weeklong road trip together. I, for one, believed it was a relationship survival test masquerading as a climbing trip, but what better way to learn if your boyfriend is the one for you than to be enclosed together in a metal box on wheels for 20 hours? Thankfully, the relationship came out alive, and 20 long hours later, we made it to the land of skin-splitting highballs.

The actual town of Bishop is quite big, and the residents and visitors consist of not only climbers, but of other outdoor enthusiasts alike. The locals are blessed to have the popular bakery known as Erick Schat’s Bakkerÿ famous for their original Sheepherder Bread®. For us, their chili-cheese bread was a great way to refuel our bodies after a hard session of climbing rock, although I’m sure many high-performing athletes would have disagreed…

For $2 USD a night, we stayed in “the Pit” campground. Our accommodation unit was David’s Green Honda Element, commonly known as “the Hulk”. The back of the SUV was converted cleverly as our sleeping space, cushioning the hard plastic ground using one tattered, sad-looking Madrock crash pad.

During the week that we were there, we had a simple routine. I called it, the “Routine of the Valley People”… (for no apparent reason other than it sounded pretty frickin’ awesome). The days would always begin with the sweet light of nature’s alarm clock, the sun. After having an easy breakfast of yogurt and cereal, we would clean up, pack up the crash pads, and head straight into town for our first stop. We needed our daily boost of caffeine and our “go-to” was Looney Bean, a coffee shop just off the main road. There, we would update on our social media sites and write back home to let our family and friends we were still alive.

After our morning duties, we went out to play!

There were three main boulder areas that David was most familiar with:

1) The Buttermilks (his favourite)

2) The Happy Boulders

3) The Sad Boulders (my favourite)

On our first day, we hit up the Happy’s. It was pretty overcast that afternoon but the conditions were good. Warmer days made it harder to climb as a result of less friction; cooler days were favourable. The Happy’s was where I climbed my first highball. I wasn’t entirely keen at first, but when one is in the land of highballs, one must climb a highball…

After our first day of preparing ourselves up for the week ahead, we headed back into town and grabbed some essentials, namely food and toothbrushes. Our meals weren’t too extravagant, but they sure beat a lot of other campers’ meals. (That happens quite often when your boyfriend is an amazing chef, even with the most limited of resources.)

On the consecutive days, we would mainly climb at the Milks. This climbing venue is quite possibly the most well known if not most popular area in Bishop. It is home to some of the hardest routes in the world such as the Mandala V12 and Evilution V11 in the milks.

A unique feature of the Milks includes the highballs, which could reach up to 5-stories high at the peak. While highball climbs are ones I stay shy of, it’s breathtaking and awe-inspiring to watch other climbers push their mental game.

During our entire stay, we had two rest days. One was spent at a natural hot spring at a slightly secret location (in which I will only reveal the whereabouts in exchange for your favourite secret location… or “the Google”); the other rest day was spent in a secluded stretch of brush and weeds where we basked in the sun, played around, and drank beers. We also had a game of “pull body hairs out with tweezers”, but it got old real quick.

On some nights, we had big bonfires and invited our neighbours over for beers. One particular night, I pulled out my ukulele and our neighbor Yve brought over her Mandolin. Together, we jammed over the dancing flame and into the night. It’s pretty wild yet clear how one place can bring so many people of different avenues together.

Bishop, hands down, has been one of my favourite climbing playgrounds. It is a land where desert plains are dusted with sand-coloured boulders resembling colossal eggs; where the view from the top is strikingly different yet immensely magical all the same. Bishop, we will see you again some day.

Well ok, this is kind of a different subject, and probably not the most obvious to some. But I’ll guarantee some of us will be a little bit more informed, folks might even feel safer when they drive to work tomorrow. Whether you’re the consumer or an automotive sales consultant, this article will list a dozen important safety features found on every car on the road. The consumer can benefit knowing what’s on today’s automobiles, just in case he/she meets the salesman who is not the most educated on their product knowledge. And lastly, sales consultants can enhance their presentations with these tasty tid-bits and increase potential commissions. So without fail, here are the main safety features found on the exterior of those cars.

#1-crumple zones-A mainstay in today’s automobiles, this is the harmonic flow of numerous body panels and brackets that absorb the energy normally associated with a crash. Parts like the hood, bumper and fenders are engineered to crumple like an accordion, therefore taking the brunt in any accidental situations.

#2-Wraparound Headlights-Just like its name implies, it’s a one piece headlight design that integrates the low beam, high beam, and turn signals. The headlights wrap around from the front or back of the car to the sides. Not only are the halogen headlights brighter and wider with the use of reflective cuts in the chamber, but folks driving along our blind spots can easily know our lane changing intentions. As a result, causing less accidents.

#3-Breakaway Motor Mounts-These mounts attach the engine to the frame of the car. They’re not noticeable, but the life saving impact is huge. In a front impact collision, they’re specifically designed to break the engine away from the frame and with the forward motion, will make the engine slide underneath the car at a 45 degree angle. Making it less likely to have an engine sitting in your lap when the crash comes to a halt.

#4-steel belted radials-It’s pretty obvious, our tires are very important safety features, it is what keeps the car on the road. Tires are built with steel fibers built right in, how do they help? Well, motorists will have the peace of mind that their tires will hold up in even the most extreme conditions. Those belts will also give these tires a longer lasting life span. Less maintenance in the long run.

#5-ventilated disc brakes-Equally important as the tires are, disc brakes stop the car. Brakes are constructed of a rotor, pads, and calipers for short. The rotors are engineered with internal vanes, to help vent out the heat. And this will help defend against fade and making it less likely to repair the brakes often.

#6-Side Impact Door Beams-Like the crumple zones, this aids in absorbing energy in a side impact collision. They are steel intrusion beams built inside the door for extra reinforcement. Every car and truck have these.

#7-Laminated Windshield-This might be important, it is the very object that keeps bugs out of our teeth, and the rain out of our hair. The windshield is made up of two pieces of tempered glass with a laminate sheet in between. This is a glass sandwich that holds together well when sharp or heavy objects smash into it. There’s no shattering or large pieces of glass flying about.

#8-Tempered Safety Glass-The other glass that gives us 360 degrees of protection is also designed with safety in mind. Automotive glass is heat tempered, so that when it breaks, it shatters into a multitude of small cubes. The small cubes won’t cut or injure the occupants.

#9-Child Safety Door Locks-As this name indicates, they are small locks in the inside door jams of the rear two doors(4 door sedan or suv only). Lock them up and the little guys in the back seat can’t unlock and pull the inside door handles while we are driving.

#10-5 mph bumpers-I would classify this as a safety item for the car itself. In the event a driver lightly hits a lightpole, grocery cart, etc. at 5mph or under, it is unlikely there will be any major structural damage. These days, the government mandated limit to follow is 2.5 mph, most automakers have the 5 mph variety.

#11-Center High Mounted Brake Light-It’s actually just a 3rd brake light mounted higher than the two main brake lights, and most autos have them. They’re main purpose is to make drivers behind the motorist aware of their braking intentions, normally cars 6-10 back can see this clearly.

#12-Safety Cage Construction-Think of a built in rollcage, it’s the main exo-skeletal feature that provides the most protection. In every accidental situation, this protects 360 degrees. We can even literally turn a car or truck upside down on its roof, the cage will support 1.5x it’s own weight. There’s nothing more important.

Hence, there is our short list of safety features, hopefully you readers have a use for this information. And maybe, this will put more awareness at just how safe our cars really are. No longer will we pinpoint safety as just airbags and alarm systems, our daily drivers have been designed as intricately as the human body. All this for making our commutes, a safer one.

Objective

To find out how a submarine uses a propeller and a stabilizing fin for forward movement.

Introduction

Although the submarine you have seen in a movie seems to be gliding along effortlessly, it is actually fighting the forces of gravity, pressure, friction and buoyancy. Have you ever encountered these terms in previous science fair experiments? Among all other science fair experiments, this is one of the best, as you will understand how these forces are overcome by the submarine.

Materials

A 500ml water bottle, a soda bottle (2 liter), knife, scissors, 2 large paperclips, needle-nose pliers, chopsticks, 3 rubber bands, stiff ruler, a silicone sealant, a bathtub or pool

Preparation

The Propeller

This is one of those science fair experiments in which you will need the assistance of an adult.

  • Cut a soda bottle (2 liter) in half. Take the bottom for making a propeller with 5 curved separate blades.
  • Two holes are to be drilled in the propeller, in the centre and a little off-centre.
  • Cut a small plastic circle out of the remaining 2-litre soda bottle. Bore a hole at the centre of this circular piece of plastic and the submarine bottle cap.
  • The free end of a straightened paperclip should be passed through the cap of the bottle, the circular plastic and the centered propeller hole. The free end should be bent back and passed through the non-centered hole in such a way as to keep the cap, the plastic piece and the propeller in close contact with each other, but allow the propeller to rotate freely.

The Submarine

  • Drill two holes at the bottom of a 500 ml water bottle similar to the propeller holes.
  • Now feed the straightened end of a paperclip from the inside of the bottle through the central hole. Bend the free tip and pass it in the non-centered hole. Secure the paperclip in such a way that it will not turn. This part is very tricky, so use a chopstick.
  • Attach a rubber band between both the paperclip hooks. The rubber band must be tightly stretched between the hook at the bottle’s base and the hook on the cap.
  • Attach the ruler perpendicular to the water bottle body in the centre with the help of two rubber bands in the form of an “X”. The ruler is your stabilizing fin.
  • Now use a waterproof sealant to close all the paperclip holes in the bottle.

Your submarine is now ready.

Testing your Submarine

  • Fill three-quarters of the submarine bottle with water and put the cap on.
  • Turn the propeller to build potential energy in the rubber band. Science fair experiments require that you write down all your activities. So count the number of turns and write this number in your lab book. You must turn the propeller that many times in future.

Procedure

Now you will position the stabilizing fin in the front, center and the back in different ways and have some fun observing how your submarine moves. Record your observation each time. Use the below-mentioned ten positions.

  1. No fins-
  2. Middle: Fin Centered-
  3. Middle: Fin moved to the right –
  4. Middle: Fin moved to the left –
  5. Front: Fin Centered-
  6. Front: Fin moved to the right –
  7. Front: Fin moved to the left –
  8. Back: Fin Centered-
  9. Back: Fin moved to the right –
  10. Back: Fin moved to the left –

The observations will allow you to answer the following questions:

  • What would happen if there was no stabilizing fin?
  • What is the best position for the fin?
  • Why is a stabilizing fin important in a submarine?

If you’re ready to get started with your submarine experiment, your next step is to download a free copy of “Easy Steps to Award-Winning Science Fair Projects” from the link below right now.

Your lungs are one of the most important organs in your body. They enable you to breathe and get a good amount of oxygen. They also help in eliminating carbon dioxide from the blood. The oxygen will help the body become healthy and vibrant. One of the things that will signal how healthy your lungs are is the lung capacity.

What is lung capacity? This is the maximum amount of oxygen that your lungs can accommodate. It is the amount of air that you can breathe in. When you are still young, the lung capacity is usually very large. However, there are certain factors that affect it. Let us discuss some of them.

The first factor is age. The body of children functions better than the body of an adult. This is because as you age, your body ages as well and the organs are not as healthy as before. This is the same for your lungs. The older you become, the less air you can hold. This is the reason why a lot of older people breathe rapidly and try to catch their breath.

The second factor is food. That’s right! The food that you eat has an effect to lung capacity. For instance, if you consume fruits that are rich in vitamin C and E, you can improve the ability of the lungs to hold air. Vitamin C and E are important vitamins and antioxidants that clear the organs from any harmful substance. Examples of these are citrus fruits and green leafy vegetables. Now you have more reasons to eat your veggies. Foods that are high in fats, for instance, are not good because they will increase your weight – which brings us to the next item.

The third factor is weight. According to studies, people who are obese have less lung capacity. This is because a lot of energy is being used to distribute nutrients in the body. You will need more oxygen to make sure that your entire body gets the amount they need. This is the reason why when you see obese people, you can easily notice that they breathe fast especially after doing physical exercises.

The fourth factor is medical condition. If you have some respiratory problems, it could affect the capacity and the overall work of your lungs. If you think your breath becomes shorter and shorter, you should immediately consult a doctor.

There are many ways on how you can improve your capacity. However, the best known method is through breathing exercise. You should always be concerned on how you breathe. You need to take in oxygen while slowly filling up your lungs. This will help the lungs expand more. You can then exhale slowly in order not to shock the lungs. Improve your lung capacity and you will have more amount of oxygen inhaled.

Dental insurance is not only for those who are employed. It is important for students to have access to dental care, too. But as students, paying for those dental premiums could be very expensive. Fortunately, there are dental companies that offer student dental insurance to accommodate the needs of the students.

Such insurance for students are mainly for university and college students. However, private and public school could also offer different forms of dental plans. There are insurance companies who would provide dental coverage through the school, making it easy for students to have access. If the insurance is provided through the school, the payment can be included in the tuition fee.

There are different plans available to students. But the most popular would be the dental capitation insurance scheme. Under this scheme, you would be getting dental care from the dental provider assigned by the insurance provider. In a university, the provider would be the one present in the school or the university. Fees are paid annually or monthly. Benefits included are usually for preventive care.

One problem with school dental plans is that the school rarely advertises them. It treats on the student to seek them out. Unfortunately, there are students or people who would not seek dental plan until after a serious dental problem has occurred.

Another problem for students would be how they would be able to get continue with their insurance, after their graduation. Parents could provide assistance in helping their grown-up children in finding dental plans that would be able to meet their needs. Another option for newly graduated students who are looking for ways to secure their dental insurance, would be using temporary or a short term insurance.

For those looking to invest, you should know that many investments can be categorized as being high risk, moderate risk and low risk. Investing is not difficult, but you should always put lots of thought and planning into it. It is also extremely important to educate yourself about the many different investments available to you so you can find those that fit best with your specific situation and lifestyle. Here are some tips regarding the three categories of investing.

Low Risk Investments

While low risk investments are usually very low key and rarely are extremely glitzy or publicized, they do offer conservative investors a way to save money for the short or long term without the risk involved that you find in other forms of investing. Low risk investments usually pay the lowest yields, but are far less volatile than many other types of investments. Low risk investments include money market funds, certificate of deposits and some types of bonds. Low risk investments are perfect for those that want to make sure there money remains safe and secure. While low risk investments don’t offer high returns, they do offer stability and security for those that can’t afford to lose money or would just like to avoid as much risk as possible. Expect low risk investments to pay out yields of 1% to 5% annually.

Moderate Risk Investments

Moderate risk investments are perfect for those that are interested in investing for the long term and would like to earn moderate yields. Moderate risk investments are usually certain kinds of stocks, bonds and mutual funds that pay handsomely over the long term. While generally riskier than saving money in a bank, for those that are looking to invest for the long term, historically speaking you will grow your money quite nicely. Moderate risk investments usually use the power of compound interest and time to create a nest egg from 10 to 40 years with regular savings. For instance, saving 1K per year at an interest rate of 10% for 30 years can return close to 200K. Moderate risk investments usually return yields of 5% to 12%.

High Risk Investments

High risk investments are those investments that if you are lucky can return huge yields, however the downturn is that they can be extremely volatile and in many cases instead of getting rich off your investment, you find yourself losing some or all of it. High risk investments include penny stocks, international stocks, some types of Forex trades, etc. The sky is the limit for returns, but many high risk investments- if considered a winner should return yields that range from 10% to 30%++.

Holidays are the busiest seasons for flight companies and travel agencies because many people are trying to secure flights to their favorite destinations before the planes get full. It is also the time that there are requests for last minute bookings that may result in a lot of delays and last minute bookings as well which are always more expensive because of the time in which they are booked.

In case you are planning to travel for holidays within the year and you want to travel without any hassle at the time of your holiday travel you need to plan early. Planning early allows you to be able to buy tickets that are affordable for you and your family that will leave you some money to enjoy at the holiday destination. When you buy air tickets early you have plenty of airlines and packages to compare from so that you are able to choose the one that fits your budget and gives you enough time to plan around the holiday trip.

Traveling as a group to a holiday destinations allows you to enjoy group fares to your destination only if you make your bookings early. It is harder to get group fares near the day of departure because many passengers are looking to pay any amount of fare to be able to reach their destination within the holiday period. You can make plans with friends and family to travel together to the same destination or near the same place so that you can enjoy these discounts as well.

Late night or early morning flights are usually cheaper flights because of the inconvenience that the passengers have to go through to be able to make it for the flight. If you are looking to book even cheaper flights then these late or early flights are the best to book as early as possible.

Booking cheap flights packages is also another option if you are looking to enjoy discounts on cheap flights. These packages usually include hotel accommodation; flight fare as well as car hire and because of these services combined which usually reduce the overall flight fare. This is a great advantage to people traveling for holiday because this type of package encompasses the services that most people would need when on holiday.

Lastly, booking cheap flights is possible for holidays especially if they are booked in advance before the holiday season.

Getting yourself a dental insurance is cheaper for you when you go for a dental check up. That would be the best answer for the above question. Many people just do not care or bother about getting themselves with it. Maybe they are not aware of the benefits when they get themselves with one.

Did you know that your dental health care can be a very expensive process? Just having one tooth treated costs a lot and you do not want to waste your hard earned money on that. In order to take good care of your teeth, having a policy can be the best precaution. They cover your dental check up, dental fillings and even major procedures if needed.

Let us see few reasons why you need to get yourself with one policy.

Cheaper: The first reason to have a dental health insurance plan is that it is a cheaper alternative. When you do not have a plan and regularly visit your dentist, you do not realize that you are burning a hole in your pocket. Dental check ups itself can cost you lots of money and when you have a plan, you stand the chance of getting your money back.

With a plan, you can get at least more than 80% of money back in some cases the whole amount back. In the current poor economy, this is a very good option of saving money.

Treatment can be done better: When you have a plan, you either have an option of selecting your own dentist or getting one assigned to you by the insurance company. When that happens, you get accustomed to the same dentist, who gives you good treatment as he / she is aware of your dental problems. When you visit different dentists each time you ruin yourself from getting a good treatment.

Make sure that you get yourself dental insurance policy at the earliest.

A beautiful garden is defined in as many different ways as there are gardeners in the world. Some gardeners prefer neat, well-trimmed rows of flowers and shrubs, while others allow their gardens to grow as the plants please, taking care only to constantly remove the weeds. There are gardeners who prefer to cultivate exotic blooms from distant lands, tending to them with meticulous care and unwavering dedication. Others still choose common, hardy local plants which need only minimal watering and sufficient sunlight. How true it is that gardening is deeply personal.

Keeping Your Garden on Solid Ground

However many ways a lovely garden may be described, a healthy garden warrants a much narrower definition. Different plants require different care, of course, but one very common and effective way to help keep plants healthy is through mulching.

There are a number of benefits a garden derives from proper mulching. Most gardeners prefer organic mulches even with the added work and maintenance that they require. Organic mulches decompose over time, thus replenishing the nutrients in the soil. These fresh nutrients improve the overall soil condition around the plant, increasing fertility and oxygen levels.

If your garden is on uneven ground, mulching can help prevent the damage caused by soil erosion. But even if your garden is on pretty level ground, soil erosion can still occur – either through wind or the amount of foot traffic that takes place. Mulching helps prevent soil erosion in any garden terrain, making sure your plants remain firmly rooted in healthy, fertile soil.

Keeping Moisture in and Weeds out

Mulching also helps the ground retain moisture, so you don’t have to water your garden as often nor use as much water when you do. The right amount of mulch in your garden keeps moisture close to the plant roots where it is readily absorbed.

Proper mulching helps prevent weeds from flourishing and taking over your garden. Weeds, the bane of every gardener’s existence, are extremely resilient and prolific. But with the right kind of mulch that is regularly replenished, their growth is minimized and the hours a gardener spends on his or her knees fighting a tug-of-war with them becomes much less. For many gardeners, this benefit alone is worth the extra effort required to mulch a garden.

Mulching lends order and beauty to any garden. But more than that, it helps maintain the health of your garden. For serious gardeners who call their plants by name, this is perhaps the number one reason to do it.
