2019

At this time in a youngster's life it can be very difficult to keep up with just about everything not to mention their dental care. The effort put into keeping teeth and gums healthy can really get off track at this time.

One of the things that may help at this age is it is the time when looks become important. A teen wanting to be attractive can be an advantage for you to use as a tool to encourage the ongoing dental hygiene routine. The fortunate teen that doesn't need braces at this point is still at risk for other problems that seem to emerge at this time of life. Parents need all the moral support they can get and if the relationship has been built with a family dental team, they can provide some of that assistance. There are no shortcuts in a good hygiene regimen. Often seen at this age are that teens rely on mouthwash as a substitute for cleaning.

Unfortunately this may be a time when some unhealthy habits are encouraged by peers. Tobacco use possibly being the most prevalent. It may be of help to point out that the physical effects of smoking, oral and otherwise, will not show up until the habit is well established to the point of addiction. Maybe just some straight talk about not even giving tobacco the chance to take away the control we all have over our health would be helpful. Anti-smoking sites can be found online and possibly some of the graphic examples could help stimulate dialog but be aware that some are very graphic.

Sometimes the rites of passage from childhood to adult have side effect that will last a lifetime. Smoking being one, some others are Anorexia and Bulimia. Damage to teeth seems fairly insignificant when put up against the other devastating side effects of these terrible diseases but it is another area in which your family dental team can help you monitor your families' health. Teeth will soon show the effects of Bulimia Nervosa, in fact 26% of Bulimia cases are first diagnosed by dentists.

Another subject that may arise at this time is body piercing. Teens wanting to show their individuality or even rebellion may decide that tongue piercing is a way to do this. The list is long on why this is a bad idea, not the least of which is that the piercing site is very hard to keep clean and infection free. Other reasons include chipped teeth, site bleeding and gum damage. There is a very good web page on this subject that covers it well and very simply. Parents might want to take a look at it with their teens who want to have the piercing done it is: http://www.drhendry.ca/InfoAndLinks/TonguePiercing/Piercing.html

These very unsettling subjects are not meant to create panic in parents but to illustrate how a family dental team is indispensable when it comes to your families' health. These subjects also make getting back to the discussion of braces a bit of a relief.

If your child or teen is referred to an orthodontist for a malocclusion correction, oral care is obviously going to be more complicated than life without braces. Your orthodontist and your family dentist can work as a team to be sure that optimum results are achieved. Parents and teens certainly don't want to put the time, effort and expense into braces or retainers and end up with other problems in the long run. Gum care and all around oral hygiene are essential. While there is no substitute for brushing and flossing there are products on the market that can be very handy. The orthodontist will undoubtedly show the patient how to use an interproximal brush, commonly called a proxy brush or Christmas tree brush, to clean under braces. Possibly patients will want to look into getting a Waterpik TM or Sonicare TM Toothbrush to help with the process of cleaning teeth with braces on them. It is not uncommon for dentists to see very expensive corrective work surrounded by gums that will not sustain healthy teeth, even if they do come out straight, due to lack of maintenance, so this extra care is essential. Swishing with room temperature salt water can help mild soreness or inflammation of mouth or gums. It's an old fashioned remedy that still is prescribed today.

From the eruption of the twelve year molars to the eruption of the wisdom teeth can be a challenge. It's a good time to have the help and advice of professionals who see the common mistakes everyday. Things the team can remind your teen that are all too often seen are:

– Not to rely on short cuts, most often mouth wash, in substitute for a dental hygiene routine.

– The damage smoking can and will do to teeth and gums not to mention over all health.

– Tongue piercing may not be worth the risks involved and the extra hassle to keep infection from becoming a factor.

– There is a need to talk to parents and get help when peer and societal pressure begins to threaten their self esteem or well being.

– Oral hygiene and extra care when braces are needed is going to be more involved than care for teeth without braces but it will be well worth the effort in the end.

Many people neglect the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene. Consulting a dentist frequently can be of great help in preventing a number of dental conditions. However this can be time consuming as well as very expensive. You need to be very careful in choosing the right dentist who will deliver the right dental care. The following guidelines will help you to find the best dentist available in your area.

At first you may consider reading out reviews about different dentists in your area. You may go through sites which provides enough information about various dentists, thereby giving you the privilege to compare and select the best one out of them. You can also ask your friends and relatives regarding the best professional dentists available in the city as well.

Once you have prepared a list of limited number of dentists, you may start looking out for comments and reviews given by others who have already consulted them for various oral problems. An individual might be paid to write only good reviews or negative reviews. Therefore, you must consider reading all reviews, not just stick only to a single review. If you find all reviews have similar things to convey, then these can be trusted since they are pointing out a specific problem.

The next thing you need to consider while choosing a dentist is the cost charged for his / her services. Normally the costs of dental treatments are quite high and due to this many people neglect the need for dental care even if they have serious dental problems. The dentist fees vary from one dentist to another. Many people believe that the higher the cost the better will be the quality of services rendered by a dentist. But this is not always true.

Sometimes you might be able to find affordable dentists who render good quality services to customers. Begin your search to find a professional dentist who charges less money without any compromise in the quality of treatment. There will be special prices charged on different dental procedures. Be sure to enquire about these charges before selecting one.

After deciding on a dentist, you should pay a direct visit to their office. This will give you a lot of information that you wouldn't be able to find from online researches. You might consider taking a look at the equipment used by the dentist. Even though you are not a professional, you will be able to understand if the facilities are well maintained or not. Also take a look at the number of patients in the waiting room. This reflect the reputation of a dentist.

Giving you a smile of confidence

Dental implants are specifically designed to serve as a foundation for teeth replacement that not only look good but also feel good. With these implants you can function like you have natural teeth. Anyone who has lost his teeth can amazingly bring back his ability to eat anything he desires with the confidence that he already has teeth closest to the real thing. These implants do make teeth appear natural plus preserve facial contours. This is how you and anybody else with damaged or broken teeth can have the confidence to smile and feel confident again.

Why should you opt for dental implants? The answer is that it is way stronger and sturdier that bridges and dentures and other restorative counterparts. These implants practically offer an everlasting solution to tooth loss. The great thing about allowing your dentist to use these implants is that it can be used together with some dental restorative methods for total effectiveness. These implants can also be used to support dental bridges for missing teeth as well as use it with dentures to boost gum stability and lessen gum tissue irritation.

These implants are small titanium posts that are surgically entrenched into the jawbone where the missing teeth are located. These amazing fixtures act as substitutes to tooth roots. The bone then tends to bond with the posts to make a strong foundation for the fake teeth. There are smaller posts which are attached to the implants and these usually protrude through the gums providing stable anchors for the artificial teeth.

If you decide to get these implants from a reliable dentist do not expect a very early recovery. This is like any other invasive dental procedure. After you have the implants fitted it requires eight to twelve weeks of healing time before the final teeth are put into place. Furthermore, getting these implants does not need to have a second procedure thus there is lesser discomfort and pain.

Getting dental implants and anywhere else may be a risky and quite expensive procedure. This is why you need to approach the experts. There are many specialty dentists who can easily do the job of placing implants in your tooth without inflicting so much pain on your gums or mouth. Make sure that the dentist you choose to put the dental implants is using the most recent advancement in dental implant technology. Otherwise, you would end up having a bad false tooth.

If you wish to have dental implants look for a highly reputable maxillofacial and oral surgeon. You can also go to restorative dentists to make and place the implant for you. Dental implants actually require team effort because as the maxillofacial surgeon performs initial tooth extraction and bone grafting the restorative dentists makes or fits the permanent prosthesis. With this people to handle your dental needs, you do not have to worry about safety and quality especially when the person you hired is top of the line.

If you have a Lewis Smith Lake home or know somebody with a house on Smith Lake, I am sure that you are aware that the lake is very clean and very deep compared to other reservoirs in the area, but did you know that it has an average depth of 65 ft. And did you know that it is the deepest lake in the state of Alabama with a depth of 264 feet at the dam? It is pretty simple to find out that this reservoir occupies 3 counties: Cullman County, Walker County, and Winston County. It is a very large lake. Even though its length is only 35 miles from one end to the other, its perimeter covers over 526 miles. It contains the 2nd largest volume of water in the state and is fed by a 944 mile watershed. At full pool, which is 510 ft above sea level, this impoundment contains 1,390,000 acre-feet of water, and the water stays in this lake for more time than any other lake in the state. The water moves through the lake for approximately 435 days before it exits through the dam.

A lot of people are let down when they see the dam for the 1st time. People seem to expect the water to run over the top of the dam. Smith Lake Dam is not made for the water to run over it. In fact, if you look around the upper area of the dam, you will notice a lot of cleared land that has been excavated near the launch and across Smith Lake Dam Road. These spots were created to hold water in the event of a severe flood so that the dam and the areas below the dam are not washed by the erosion that would be caused by such an enormous amount of water that would otherwise rush over the dam. How does the water leave the lake then? In an effort to elude this type of disaster, the water is pulled through two huge steel pipes which are located deep below the lake’s surface on the high side of the dam. Did you know water is always flowing through the dam leaving Smith Lake? The water flows through the pipes at different rates depending on the need for electricity and the volume of water entering the lake at any given time. Because water is always flowing through the dam, the turbines are always spinning, sometimes generating power and at other times acting like a voltage regulator for the stored electricity.

You have probably never thought about it, but the water flowing through the dam is very cold year round since it is drawn from such deep water. Did you know that the water below Smith Lake Dam maintains a temperature of approximately 57 degrees fahrenheit? This is why the state of Alabama started stocking the tail waters of Smith Lake with rainbow trout. They stock the Sipsey Fork below the dam seven times a year at the end of each of the following months: January, March, April, May, July, September, and November. Did you know that they release between 3500 and 4000 hatchery raised rainbow trout into this river at each stocking? They continue to stock the river because the rainbow trout can not reproduce here due to the swift currents and the rapidly changing level of the water below the dam. The eggs are either washed away, or they surface during low water times. It is nice to know that we have the opportunity to fish for these trout right here in Alabama. It is just one more characteristic of Smith Lake that makes it special.

If you are more of a traditional fisherman, it might interest you that Smith Lake has held records for spotted bass and saltwater stripe. You might want to try your luck off of the shores of the Bankhead National Forest. Did you know the Bankhead National forest provides 3 parks on Smith Lake for your enjoyment? You ought to check out Clear Creek Recreational area, Houston Recreational area, and Corinth Recreational area when you are ready to start experiencing Lewis Smith Lake. I know you will love it here, and you will be drawn to the unique beauty. For more information about Smith Lake, please visit http://www.HousesOnSmithLake.com

The PPO dental plans are one of the most popular dental plans available for individuals looking for dental coverage at an affordable price. PPO stands for Preferred Provider Organization and here, individuals have the freedom to choose which dentist they'd like to work with instead of having to deal with the unfamiliar dentists that numerous dental insurance providers have in their network.

Getting dental insurance is vital nowadays with the rising cost of just about everything. People who go for routine maintenance like oral exams, check-ups and prophylaxis know how expensive these procedures can be. And what's worse is that prices are continually rising which is why getting a dental discount plan seems to be the most logical choice. In fact, many companies offer the PPO dental plans to their employees. The beauty of it is that it covers not only basic dental maintenance, but also surgical procedures and preventive care.

Since the dental discount plan is also part of a network system, dentists usually sign up for them in the hopes of getting more patients. Insurance providers will then refer their clients to the dentists, who in turn, will lower their rates for these clients in acknowledgment of the referral. As a result, clients of the different insurance providers pay less for the dental procedures that is covered by the plan they have chosen, the dentists get more patients, and the providers also profit from the discounted dental costs.

There are many advantages in choosing the PPO dental plans. Like previously mentioned, it allows people the freedom to choose their preferred dentist. However, the dentists that providers recommend usually offer discounts which means that patients pay less. More dentists are also more eager to work with clients of certain insurance providers. This is because they know that it is the referrals that keep their business growing. PPO dental plans are easy to process so that clients no longer need to wait for a long period of time for the policy to take effect. They can avail of the many dental services in the shortest time possible. Since the dentists are also part of the insurance network, people are saved the hassle of filing for paper works each time they avail of a dental service because the dentists can already do it for them.

However, there are also drawbacks in the PPO dental plans. Firstly, dentists can turn away clients if they see that the policy they have chosen does not include reimbursement for dental services that they will render. This can easily turn customers off which is why insurance providers should thoroughly explain matters to their clients to avoid confusion. Many clients also do not like the PPO dentist network because it forces them to part with their preferred dentists due to the limited benefits they get if they choose to go to the latter for their dental needs.

What are Dental Pulp Stem Cells (DPSCs)?

The soft living tissue inside the tooth is known as dental pulp. Stem cells present here are named as DPSCs. These are pluripotent and have the potential to differentiate into a variety of cell types.

Where are DPSCs found?

The best DPSCs are present in baby teeth or milk teeth, especially in the upper and lower canines and incisors. Research has shown DPSCs are also present in wisdom tooth of young adults.

DPSCs from the milk teeth are 'mesenchymal' type of cells. They have the ability to differentiate into variety of cell types including – chondrocytes, osteoblasts and adipocytes.

What are the potential uses of DPSCs?

DPSCs play a vital role in regenerative stem cell therapy of many degenerative and life threatening conditions. They have a wide range of potential therapeutic application.

Cardio Myocytes : Aid to repair damaged cardiac tissue following a heart attack.

Neuronal : Generate nerve and brain tissue.

Myocytes : Repair muscle tissue.

Osteocytes : They have the ability to generate bone.

Chondrocytes : They have the ability to generate cartilage, which would have an important role in the treatment of arthritis and joint injuries.

Adipocytes : Generate fat tissue.

Thus DPSCs can generate hard structures of the body such as bone, new dental tissue, cartilage and muscle.

What is stemcell harvesting?

It is a process of collection and preservation of DPSCs. They are frozen and stored at stem c ell bank, with appropriate labeling, using cryopreservation technology to maintain their viability, on retrieval in future.

Collection – A Dentist extracts the tooth packs it in a dental sampling kit and sends it to laboratory facility for further processing.

Isolation – The dental pulp, containing the stem cells is isolated by breaking open the tooth and the stem cells are extracted. These are tested for sterility and quality control (assessment of their viability).

Cryopreservation – If they pass the viability assessment, they will be stored cryogenically. The DPSCs are frozen by keeping the levy at a temperature of -150 C (-238 F) in liquid nitrogen.

What is unique about DPSCs banking?

DPSCs banking has the following advantages which are one of its kind:

  • The time period for banking healthy DPSCs is wide, since it can be done for children in the age group of 5-12 years and also for adults whose wisdom tooth is to be extracted.
  • Their collection from the pulp of the tooth is easy, painless, quick, highly efficient, with no ethical complications, as it involves a simple process of extraction of the tooth.
  • DPSCs are non-controversial adult stem cells, unlike those with embryonic origin, the source of which involves ethical issues.
  • DPSCs have demonstrated interactivity with biomaterials, making them ideal for tissue reconstruction.

A lot of individuals usually confuse dental hygienists careers with those of dental assistants. Other than the fact that these two occupations are in dental care, they are actually quite different from each other and have different tasks. Dental assistant duties involve lab and office work that are connected to patient care. These assistants are not permitted to do the duties that hygienists are allowed to do. Basically, assistants offer help to professional licensed dentists.

There are many kinds of duties that dental assistants do depending on their work environment. Usually the tasks they are responsible for include sterilizing instruments and arranging instrument trays. Instrument trays have to be complete with all the tools and equipment that are needed for the dental procedure to be performed. Cleansing and sterilizing these instruments properly is very important to providing the best dental care to patients. It is their job to make sure that all the things are ready for use for the dentist so that the dental procedure will go according to plan. These assistants provide help not only to dentists but also to dental hygienists.

There are some who would rather not be in school for long and would rather begin working immediately. If this is how you feel, then it would be ideal for you to become a dental assistant. These assistants do not need to graduate from any program seeing as the skills that are gained are learned from training on the job. However, there are still some who would prefer to get training by joining a program. But knowing that you don't have to complete a program or a degree just to find work is a good thing for some. Obtaining a license is not mandatory as well. On the other hand, dental hygienists cannot practice until they have earned their license.

The responsibilities of a dental hygienist are quite different from the duties of a dental assistant. A dentist supervises hygienists and they do procedures and techniques that dentists used to perform years ago. Basically, the duties of a hygienists consists of doing preventive oral care, offering dental assistance to dentists in oral procedures, curing gum disease, and also administering local anesthetic. In addition, they must notify patients of correct oral hygiene in order to promote dental health. Having dental hygienists for assistance enables dentists to focus and take care of dental procedures that are more critical.

It is obvious that dental assistant duties are not the same as those of a dental hygienist. Even if dental hygienists have the chance to make more, there are also advantages to becoming a dental assistant. In this career you do not have to graduate from a program, which is ideal for those who want to start work immediately and are not able to pay for a program. Another is that as an assistant, you do not have to get a license, which is good if you aren't good at taking tests.
