March 2017

Today visitors come to pay their respects to fallen Allied soldiers or to discover for themselves more about the town’s dark past. But Kan, as locals call it, is also a great place to relax at riverside guesthouses or venture to nearby natural attractions.

THAILAND-BURMA RAILWAY CENTRE

Before you head out to the Kwai River Bridge, get a little history under your belt at this museum (%0 3451 0067; 73 Jaokannun; adult/child 60/30B; h9am-5pm). Professional exhibits outline Japan’s aggression in Southeast Asia during WWII and its plan to connect Yangon (in Burma) with Bangkok via rail for transport of military supplies. Captured Allied soldiers as well as Burmese and Malay captives were transported to the jungles of Kanchanaburi to build 415km of rail – known today as the Death Railway because of the many lives (more than 100,000 men) the project claimed.

KANCHANABURI ALLIED WAR CEMETERY

Across the street from the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre, the Kanchanaburi Allied War Cemetery (Th Saengchuto; admission free; h7am-6pm) is a touching gift from the Thai people to remember the POWs, mainly from Britain and Holland, who died on their soil.

KWAI RIVER BRIDGE (DEATH RAILWAY BRIDGE)

While the story made famous by the film The Bridge on the River Kwai is one of endurance, heroism and suffering, the span itself is just an ordinary bridge with an extraordinary history. A bit of imagination and some historical context will help to enliven a visit to the bridge, which was a small but strategic part of the Death Railway to Burma. Engineers estimated that construction would take five years, but the human labourers were forced to complete the railway in 16 months. Allied planes destroyed the bridge in 1945 but later repairs restored the span; the bomb damage is still apparent in the pylons closest to the riverbanks.

During the first week of December there’s a nightly sound-and-light show put on at the bridge. It’s a pretty impressive scene, with simulations of bombers and explosions and fantastic bursts of light. The town gets a lot of tourists during this week, so book early. The bridge is roughly 3km from the town centre and the best way for you to reach it is by bicycle. You can also catch a sÇZwngthÇZew (5B) going north along Saengchuto, but it isn’t obvious when to get off; if you get to the Castle Mall, you’ve gone too far. There are also three daily departures across the bridge on the Kanchanaburi-Nam Tok train

WORLD WAR II MUSEUM

Near the bridge is a privately owned museum (Mae Nam Khwae; admission 30B; h9am-6pm), a veritable temple to kitsch, sometimes also known as the JEATH War Museum to capitalise on the popularity of another museum by the same name in town. The collection might be the oddest assortment of memorabilia under one roof, but the building does afford picture postcard views of the bridge.

JEATH WAR MUSEUM

This outdoor museum (Pak Phraek; admission 30B; h8.30am-6pm), the original JEATH, is run by monks as a testament to the atrocities of war. The displays of historic photographs are housed in a bamboo hut, much like the ones the POWs used. More a photo gallery than museum, it isn’t very informative, but it is heartfelt, especially the fading pictures of surviving POWs who returned to Thailand for a memorial service.

A dentist is a doctor who deals exclusively with the teeth and gums. Dental science deals with the placement, arrangement and function of teeth. It also deals with the bones and tissues supporting them.

Dentistry itself is a specialty in medical science and within it there are several specialty branches. Various kinds of dental specialties include orthodontics, prosthodontics, endodontics, periodontics, cosmetic dentistry and the like. Recent additions to the list are specialties like laser dentistry and sedation dentistry. There are nine recognized specialties in the field of dentistry. In the United States the two common doctorates awarded to dentists are DDS – Doctor of Dental Surgery and DMD- Doctor of Dental Medicine. Those who complete their maintenance training as an oral maxillofacial surgeon are awarded DMDs. The United States has 54 accredited dental schools and for a doctorate one has to put in four years of post graduate study. The minimum qualification for entry is a BS degree. Dentists are awarded licenses and are covered by the regulations of the state in which they practice.

It is often difficult to choose which specialist dentist to go to. Either you are able to delve deep into the subject and obtain information that you can utilize to find the right dentist to approach. Or you may approach a dentist, get an opinion about the kind of treatment your problem needs. Some offer free first consultations. You may need a filling, or a root canal followed by a crown, an extraction followed by an implant, dental bonding, a minor oral surgical procedure, or maybe gum surgery. Based on this opinion you may choose a qualified specialist, check out his credentials and then sink your teeth into the treatment.

You can make use of the internet to research dentists – location, qualifications and specific skills. Web sites like http://www.dentalfind.com help you locate a dentist in your area. The search window even gives you a choice of procedure to make your search yield better results. Pinpointing procedures like teeth whitening, cosmetic dentistry, smile makeovers, porcelain veneers, dental implants and the like will help locate a specialist in the field.

Insurance is often undervalued, frequently because people have a narrow mind when it comes to the insurance business as a whole. However, insurance helps to give security to business dealings. Here is a look at how insurance can give your business security.

Insurance is a swap:

All types of insurance do one thing – they exchange a small, certain payment for a large, uncertain loss. Basically, this means that you pay a small fee and fixed intervals (your premium), and the insurance company will take the risk should any losses ever occur.

Take, for instance, a flood. Floods are often destroying business property and inventory, but it is impossible to know when one will, if ever occurs. If you were able to tell when a flood would occur, you would not need homeowner insurance. But because you can not, taking out a flood insurance policy can help you replace the things that you lose when there is a flood.

Group statistics can be calculated:

While you can not tell what your chances of a flood, fire, or other disaster will be, your business group as a whole has set statistics. For instance, if you own a bakery, your risk of having a fire destroy your business is higher than the risk of a fire taking down an office building. Knowing that, you could decide that as a bakery owner, your risk of having a fire is higher, and you therefore need more insurance. If you are an office owner, you could decide that your risks are lower and that you need less insurance. Every business and every individual needs certification, and insurance can help to provide certainty in an uncertain world.

All insurances are similar:

Fire insurance is not significantly different from flood insurance, and flood insurance is not any different than life insurance. To a certain extent, all insurances are the same. If you work with life insurance, then you know that approximately 3.8% of people die before they are 25. This means that another 96.2% do not, but you have no way of knowing which of the two groups you will be in. All you can do is calculate your personal risk. The higher your risk, the higher your premium will be.

This is true of all types of insurance, including home owner's insurance . Property owners never know how good their title is. A merchant does not know how much he will lose on a given debtor. However, when you look at a large enough group, you can get an idea of what your individual risk is. Everything you do in business has a certain risk to it. On your own, you can not determine what the risk is, but as a member of a business group, you know what the statistics are for that group.

What insurance does for your business:

Business has risk. There is the risk of losing property, losing life or health of employees, or losing money, among others. What insurance does is give you some guarantee against these losses. By knowing what your risk factor is, and insuring it appropriately, you will know that you have what you need sure an incident ever occurs.

I was living in North Texas in the early 1970's when I became interested in Labrador Retrievers. My family had always had small / medium sized dogs and never owned a large pet. I began searching the classified section for inexpensive Lab puppies. The normal price range for Lab puppies at that time was $ 150 to $ 200 (remember, this was 1973). After a couple of weeks, I found a Veterinarian / Breeder in a neighboring city that had one female for $ 50. I learned that she was not considered "show stock" because she had an underbite. Other than that, she was a perfect representation of her breed in all other aspects and one of an American Kennel Club registered litter. She came home with us that afternoon and we soon registered her as "Texas Black Pepper".

Shortly after that, my company transferred me to Kentucky, which meant we would be making a 985 mile journey with a small pup that was still not used to being away from her mother and litter mates. The first night at a motel was anything but restful. Pepper was not house broken and could not be trusted to freely roam the room. As we were settling in for the evening and Pepper was asleep, I put her in the bathtub with an old blanket, hoping she would sleep through the night. Not on your Life! After about a half hour, she began howling at the top of her lungs. I got up and held her for a little while and she was back sleep so I put her back in the bathtub, hoping she would be content to sleep through the night. You guessed it, this went on until about one AM, so I finally got a pillow and a blanket and crawled in the bathtub with her. After that, we "slept" the rest of the night without incident.

We had rented a house in Kentucky in the country that was to suffice until we could buy some land and built a house. This house was built in the early 1900's and had large rooms, high ceilings, an oil-fired furnace and no air conditioning. After getting settled, I spent a great deal of my time with Pepper "training" her to fetch, sit, stay and all the basic commands one normally gives a dog. She (and I), learned very quickly that so ingrained was her desire to learn and to please me, that she would do about anything I showed her how to do. In the Spring, after we had been in the old house for about nine months, I found that the back yard was crisscrossed with mole tunnels. I did not take me but a few minutes to get her to find and dig up moles and quickly dispatch them. Unfortunately, I could not teach her to fill the holes where she had dug.

The yard was fenced, but it had some openings big enough that Pepper could squeeze through. Being a water dog, she would sneak off to the newly discovered creek across the road. This meant that someone had to be out in the yard with her, especially in warm weather. There were no underground / wireless dog wings in those days.
